Part of a new park development, the goal of this project was to help transform a previously industrial site into a nature-based environment where Iowa City residents can enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, fishing and hiking. The use of wood was instrumental in creating a sheltering and rejuvenating environment. The glulam structure and dimension lumber roof deck create a strong, secure shelter from which to observe the lake and birds. Wood was also used for its durability and aesthetics. The interior of the boat storage and rental area is clad in cedar plywood siding for its durability properties and resistance to humidity and moisture, while doors at each end are clad in cedar tongue and groove siding. This 1,210-sf project was completed in 2011 for a construction cost of $300,550.
